Ever since buses have been used as a way for public transport they have helped people to travel to and fro cheaply. In poorer countries these buses are the only way people can travel. In richer countries tourists can ply on fixed routes rather than travel in expensive private cars or taxis. There are private and government owned vehicles and can carry up to fifty passengers in full load. Ever since this system was introduced nearly two centuries ago, there have been improvements too. They are now more passenger-friendly and give smooth rides. Buses are such an integral part of city transport that a number of cities have dedicated bus lanes or bus ways which stop on various routes. Then they do not interfere with the normal vehicular traffic. This is a boon during peak hours in any city in the world. There are buses which ply within the city and some go outside too covering the length and breadth of the country. Like the railways, buses provide excellent landscape for sights and sounds for all.

As an ideal from of transportation there are different categories-express, luxury, limited, air-conditioned sleeper coaches, video and non-video coaches. Those plying on longer routes have spacious seats. In private buses one can do advance booking. For traveling within the city, daily, one can get passes or buy cheap tickets. Buses are safe means of transport and provide revenue for the government. Private owners prefer annual contracts for fixed routes- from schools, companies, organizations etc. Buses have been a symbol of prosperity in cities like London and Mumbai where it is said that if the buses are working normally, business is as usual. If the red buses are not seen on the road it means, it is cause for concern. In cities like Lucerne and Zurich in Europe, buses run because of tourists' season. Private owners have a fleet of different sized buses to cater to different requests.

In public bus transport service, routes are fixed by the government like itinerary, stops, etc. In the case of private buses, individuals run the show. So the passenger has the freedom of planning and has flexibility. Most of the bus services offer secured luggage and device storage. Some buses are crafted with enthralling designs and advanced engine technologies. New models consume less fuel and have lower maintenance cost which will help the service sectors to reduce operating costs and fare prices.
